    The Board of Health maintains The Transfer Station on Cedar St. for certain residential solid waste disposal, and it contracts with Allied Waste for curbside rubbish removal and recycling. Click below for your area of interest.

    Beginning July 1, 2003, a permit must be purchased from the Board of Health at Town Hall. The purchase of this permit will allow the resident to dispose of the following items with no additional fee: grass, leaves, brush, motor oil, latex and oil based paint on paint collection days. (Saturdays only April through November) The cost of the permit will be $20.00 per vehicle.

    Cash will not be accepted at this facility.

    With regard to trash pick up and recycling, Collections are not made on the following holidays. Whenever a scheduled collection day falls on a holiday, that day's collection and all the remaining collections for the week will be delayed one day. Friday's collections will be made on Saturday.

    Holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Patriots Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (July 4th), Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.

    The Transfer Station

    Residents of the Town of Milford may use the transfer facility on Cedar St. (Rte. 85) provided they obtain a permit from the Board of Health or from the station's attendant.
      Items Allowed Include:
    • Grass, leaves, and brush.
    • Large, crushed boxes.
    • Oil tanks, heaters, metal items such as appliances, mattresses, furniture. Awkward items must be cut-up.

    No household garbage or rubbish will be accepted.
    • No large auto parts such as car bodies, boat parts, etc.
    • No toxic waste, pathological waste, or animal carcasses.
    • No rocks or boulders, cement, bricks, asphalt or tree stumps.

    Dump trucks will not be allowed. Owners of six (6) family dwellings will not be allowed. No commercial or industrial businesses.

    Residential Solid Waste Collection
    The town of Milford has contracted with Allied Waste for weekly pickup and removal of solid waste in the town.
    • Each dwelling including apartments of no more than five (5) dwelling units is entitled to this service.
    • All garbage and recyclable material must be placed edge of roadway by 7:00 am.
    • Each unit is allowed up to four (4) items.
    • Each item shall not weigh more than 50 lbs. or exceed 35 gallons in size.
    • Each household is allowed on oversized item per week (i.e. couch, chair).
    • No large metal items unless they display a sticker which is available from the Board of Health office (i.e. appliances, lawn mowers, grills)
    • Awkward items must be into four (4) foot lengths.
    • Large auto parts will not be collected at curbside.
    • No earth stones, tree trunks, brush, grass, leaves, Christmas trees, construction debris, oil tanks and other non-household items will be collected at curbside.
    • When a collection day falls on a holiday, that day's collections and all remaining collections for the week will be delayed one day.

    For 2010, A weeks = the weeks starting Sunday, 2/14, 2/28, 3/14, 3/28, 4/11, 4/25, 5/9, 5/23, 6/6, 6/20, 7/4, 7/18, 8/1, 8/15, 8/29, 9/12, 9/26, 10/10, 10/24, 11/21, 12/5, 12/19.

    For 2010, B weeks = the weeks starting Sunday,2/21, 3/7, 3/21, 4/4, 4/18, 5/2, 5/16, 5/30, 6/13, 6/27, 7/11, 7/25, 8/8, 8/22, 9/5, 9/19, 10/3, 10/17, 10/31, 11/14, 11/28, 12/12, 12/26.

    To Recycle

    • Set your bin at the curb at lease 4 feet from trash.
    • Place newspapers in paper bags beside or on top of bin.
    • Included in paper recyclables are: newspapers, magazines, junk mail, white paper, computer paper, phone books and chip board. Do not tie
    • Place all other material together in bin.
    • Metal materials include: metal food and beverage cans, can lids, aluminum foil and trays.
    • Glass materials include: bottles and jars, all colors and sizes.
    • Plastic materials include: All bottles, jars, and tubs, juice and milk cartons, and drink boxes.
    • No plastic coated paper, food residue, tissues, or napkins.
    • No pizza boxes or waxed boxes.
    • No scrap metal, aerosol cans, paint cans, or propane tanks.
    • Rinse material and remove caps, lids, and neck rings.

    Other Board of Health Services
    The Board of Health issues permits and licenses for retail and food service establishments, tobacco sales, well and gas fixtures and public pool approvals. It also inspects all septic systems and issues burial permits.

    The Visiting Nurse Association, the nursing agency for the Board of Health, conducts blood pressure clinics, flu clinics, and other health maintenance clinics. It also supplies area physicians with vaccines.

    Through the efforts of Health Agent Mazzuchelli, Milford received over $18,000 in grants from the EPA. These grants included the distribution of over 200 compost bins to residents. Waste paint and waste oil storage containers were also awarded to the town.

    The board also conducts a Dental Health Program for school children and participates in the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Program.
